Learn all about what’s involved in ag contracting, and get yourself work-ready. During this free six week course, you’ll get a good understanding of the range of work contracting involves, and build your skills in driving farm machinery, basic mechanics, and farm health and safety.

This programme, including accommodation for the full six weeks, is completely free, and there are also free meals included Monday-Friday. On the weekends participants can return home or stay on site for free, though you will need to self-cater. The course is held at Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre, just outside of Masterton in the Wairarapa, where hard-working Kiwis have developed their farming skills for over 100 years.

?Career & Study Outcomes

This course is made up of three key modules:
  • Two weeks of Taratahi skill development, including farm Health and Safety, first aid, basic mechanics, tractor driving, towing trailers and implements, and understanding the work of an agricultural contractor.
  • Two weeks of driver training, which includes earning your wheels endorsement, forklift OSH and F endorsement, learning about loads, driver fatigue, log books, defensive driving and advanced driver training.
  • Final two weeks is on work placement: Health and safety; reading and applying Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs); coached by a more experienced person to work on tractors, attachments, and trailers; basic mechanics.

?Domestic Entry Requirements

No prior academic qualification is required, however for the six week ag contracting course you will need a full class one driver's licence. 

Participants must be physically fit and be 18 years old or over.

A verified copy of your identification

You should supply a verified copy of any of the following documents:
  • Current driver license
  • Current New Zealand passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Whakapapa statement

?Additional Costs

Meals on the weekend are self-catered at your own cost, meals during weekdays are free. Accommodation at Taratahi, including on the weekends, is free. Alternatively, participants are welcome to go home for the weekend and return by 8am Monday.
